Tonkon Torp Attorneys Lead Roundtable for Greater Portland Compliance Association

Tonkon Torp attorneys Christopher Pallanch, Sam TaylorJarell Hunt, and Jessica Morgan led a recent informational session on timely topics important to compliance professionals. The educational roundtable was hosted by the Greater Portland Compliance Association (GPCA) at the Tonkon Torp offices.

Christopher Pallanch led off the educational session by outlining the SEC Division of Examination’s 2024 compliance priorities and reviewing key 2023 enforcement actions by the Division.

Associate Sam Taylor gave an in-depth study of the FTC Safeguards Rule, overviewing its background and evolution and highlighting its requirements. She also covered the SEC Cybersecurity Disclosure Rule, which went into effect December 18, 2023, for most public companies; smaller reporting companying have until June 15, 2024, to start complying with disclosure requirements.

Jarell Hunt provided an overview on the laws and regulations protecting the elderly and those with diminished capacity from financial abuse and exploitation. Lastly, Jessica Morgan offered the audience a recap of recent and forthcoming compliance updates, including changes to investment advisor rules and continuing education requirements.

Morgan and Pallanch serve as co-chairs of the Tonkon Torp Financial Services & Investment Management Practice Group which offers counsel to investment advisers, broker-dealers, CPAs, banks, non-bank lenders, mortgage lenders, insurance companies, fintech companies, and software vendors. The group advises clients on federal and state securities laws, and on the rules and regulations of the SEC, FINRA, various securities exchanges, and state securities regulators.

The GPCA is a professional membership organization, founded in 2009, dedicated to supporting and promoting the securities compliance industry in the Portland, Oregon area.
