Tonkon Torp estate planning and real estate lawyers Jackson Lewis and Kimberlee Stafford will explain Oregon’s new Transfer on Death (TOD) deed at a July 12 meeting of the Rotary Club of East Portland.
Effective January 1, 2012, the law allows a real property owner to record a TOD deed at any time during his or her lifetime and to designate beneficiaries in the deed, possibly eliminating the need for probate following the death of the property owner. Lewis and Stafford will discuss when to use the TOD deed and what unforeseen problems to watch out for.
A partner in the firm’s Estate Planning Practice Group, Lewis advises clients, including closely-held businesses, on estate and succession planning and estate administration. He also represents clients in negotiating or litigating tax and probate matters and contested wills.
Stafford is a member of the Real Estate & Land Use Practice Group. On behalf of individuals and businesses, she represents clients in commercial real estate transactions including sales, leases, planned community development and a variety of environmental and land use matters.
