Tonkon Torp Earns Top Business Marks

Business leaders and business publications in Portland and nationally have recognized Tonkon Torp for several recent honors. While client success, not accolades, drives the firm’s attorneys and staff, they do appreciate the recognition as a leader in law in Oregon.

Tonkon Torp was just named one of The Portland Business Journal’s 2008 “Most Admired Companies.” These are organizations that over 2,000 local CEOs deem to be the very best in the region on a variety of measures including the quality of their products or services, their supportive and inspiring work environments, and their outstanding corporate citizenship. Tonkon Torp, founded in 1974, was acknowledged as a most admired company in the professional services firm category.

On the national level, sportswear giant Nike has named Tonkon Torp their “Go-To” law firm for litigation and corporate transactions. The firm will be featured in an upcoming edition of a national directory published by Corporate Counsel magazine. Tonkon Torp has worked with Nike on many of its most significant acquisitions and divestitures including the purchase of Cole Haan, Nike Bauer Hockey, Converse, Hurley and Official Starter, and the sale of Official Starter and Nike Bauer Hockey.

“Our lawyers are the reason that clients like Nike engage us year after year,” said Jeff Cronn, who chairs Tonkon Torp’s Business Department. “We put our energy and expertise into helping businesses accomplish their objectives.”

Tonkon Torp’s Business Department includes practice groups focused in the areas of corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, taxation and corporate governance. In addition to representing locally-based companies of all sizes, the department represents businesses located in other parts of the country who appreciate the firm’s practical approach.

Tonkon Torp also earned a place on Oregon Business magazine’s 2009 list of “100 Best Companies to Work For.” The ranking is based on surveys conducted with over 30,000 employees representing 372 companies in the state. Lawyers and staff at Tonkon Torp acknowledged the firm’s focus on lifelong professional development, its family friendly work policies and its longstanding commitments to diversity, community involvement and sustainability. The firm donates thousands of hours of pro bono legal services every year, encourages all employees to be engaged in community activities, and began initiating internal sustainability practices almost a decade ago.

“When you look at our firm directory, you see a diverse collection of individuals who share a common desire – to work on real-world matters in a supportive, collegial environment that brings out the best in people and produces the best result for our clients,” said Mike Morgan, Managing Partner. “That’s a value on which this firm was founded nearly 35 years ago. While we’ve changed and grown, that value has remained.”
