On September 24, Tonkon Torp attorneys Parna Mehrbani and Eric Beach continued their series of briefings to introduce the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to the Portland business community. The CCPA is a sweeping consumer privacy law that goes into effect on January 1, 2020 and will impact a significant number of businesses based in Oregon who do business in California or with California residents.
Parna and Eric provided background on the CCPA, what it covers, and how personal information is defined. They provided guidance on which businesses the CCPA will reach and reviewed requirements that will have to be followed if you collect, use, disclose, or sell a California resident’s personal information. They also shared practical tips and action items to help businesses begin to prepare for CCPA compliance such as making changes to internal data management procedures, implementing or updating online privacy policies, and preparing procedures to respond to requests from California residents.
