Litigation partner Lauren Bernton discussed finding a career that speaks to you and reviewed her own path to becoming a lawyer for an audience of University of Oregon student football players. Bernton was invited to speak as part of the University of Oregon’s DISCOVER U program, the UO’s flagship player-development event, designed to prepare student-athletes for success beyond the game of football. The program brings together student athletes, alumni, and industry professionals to provide real-world insight, spark conversation, and establish professional connections.
In her presentation, Bernton emphasized the importance of picking a career direction and trusting the process, as well as being open to pivoting when new experiences reshape your interests. She encouraged the players to view the skills they’ve developed through athletics as valuable assets in any professional setting, and highlighted the qualities athletes already have that translate well to a career in law, including: discipline and dedication, preparation and resilience, and performing well under pressure.
Lauren Bernton is a graduate of the University of Oregon School of Law and an active participant in UO’s alumni network, as well as a regular speaker on issues relating to careers in law. She is a partner in Tonkon Torp’s Litigation Department and Co-Chair of the firm’s Real Estate Disputes Group. Bernton represents international and regional businesses in all types of commercial disputes, with a strong emphasis on complex real estate litigation.
