Danny Newman Recognized as One of Portland’s 40 Under 40

Tonkon Torp is proud to announce that partner Danny Newman is one of the Portland Business Journal’s 2025 40 Under 40 award recipients. The annual award recognizes influential business and community leaders in the greater Portland area who are under 40 years old. Selection is based on career accomplishments, business influence, leadership, and community and civic involvement.

Among Danny’s accomplishments, he is leading two of the largest insolvency proceedings pending in the Pacific Northwest, serving as counsel for the receiver over several Shilo Inn Hotels and as counsel to the Debtor in Refreshing USA, a very large vending and water machine Ponzi scheme. Danny is the Treasurer for the Oregon Health Justice Center Board of Directors and is Chair of the Pioneer Courthouse Historical Society. He has worked on such high-profile pro bono initiatives as The Ramos Project and the effort to remove historic racist deed restrictions in Harris County Texas. Danny also serves as an Adjunct Law professor at Lewis & Clark Law School, teaching a class on negotiation. As Co-Chair of Tonkon Torp’s Government Law & Disputes Practice Group, he has represented prominent Oregon businesses and trade and interest groups in litigation against various Oregon state agencies and local governments.

In the words of Tonkon Torp Managing Board member Anna Sortun, “When we first recruited Danny to our firm, I was immediately struck by his confidence, thoughtfulness, and ingenuity. He not only has the smarts and tenacity necessary to tackle complex legal issues, he also has the magnetism and work ethic necessary to attract high caliber clients and matters to our firm. This is a killer combination. Danny also grew roots in our community in a relatively short amount of time through pro bono volunteer work and community volunteerism. He is a highly valued member of our firm.”

Danny Newman is a partner in Tonkon Torp’s Litigation Department, where he focuses his work in bankruptcy, reorganization, and insolvency. He has worked on the largest chapter 11 cases in the Pacific Northwest, represented debtors, receivers, and creditors of all kinds in state court litigation and out-of-court workouts, managed complex real estate and closely-held corporation disputes, and negotiated successful resolutions for challenges to ballot titles and investigations by various state agencies.

He joins a growing number of Tonkon lawyers who have received this award in prior years, including David Forman (2004), Steven Wilker (2005), Jeff Cronn (2008), Anna Sortun (2017), Blerina Kotori (2018), and Stephanie Grant (2024).

Danny and his 40 Under 40 cohort will be celebrated at a luncheon on July 17.
