Parna Mehrbani Presents California Consumer Privacy Act Overview to OSB Business Law Section

On June 20, Tonkon Torp attorney Parna Mehrbani provided an overview of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) at a CLE hosted by the Oregon State Bar Business Law Section. The CCPA, which goes into effect on January 1, 2020, is a broad consumer privacy law that will impact a significant number of businesses based in Oregon who do business in California or with California residents.

During the presentation, Parna and a fellow Portland attorney provided background on the CCPA and reviewed who it covers, what it requires, and how broadly personal information is defined. They reviewed website and privacy policy requirements as well as the numerous pending amendments to the CCPA. They also offered case studies to illustrate what businesses and their legal counsel can expect leading up to the CCPA taking effect and becoming enforceable in 2020.

Parna is co-chair of the Information Privacy & Security Practice Group, and a partner in the Intellectual Property Practice Group. Her practice is focused on intellectual property, trademark and copyright registration, licensing, and enforcement, and advising on intellectual property portfolios for local, national, and international companies. She also advises businesses on the management and security of personal data and the laws that regulate the collection, use, and protection of personal data.
