Tonkon Torp partner Abby Landon shared her expertise on international estate planning with members of the Eugene Estate Planning Council on September 18. During the presentation, Abby broke down how federal transfer tax is applied to noncitizen residents (NCR), and Nonresidents Not Citizens (NRNC) who own U.S. assets. She explored how transfer tax applies to each group, how deductions for gifts are factored, and marital portability of the estate tax exemption. She also shared estate transfer information that is specific to Oregon, and walked through a variety of scenarios such as multiple wills and considerations for when children are U.S. Citizens, but one or both parents are not. At the end of the presentation, Abby provided additional ideas and resources to ensure non-citizen spouses are provided for in estate plans.
