Max Miller Studies Papal Encyclical on Climate and Environment

Max Miller authored an article, “What Does the Papal Encyclical, Laudato Si’, Say to Lawyers?,” for the Summer 2015 issue of The Long View, the quarterly publication put together by the Oregon State Bar Sustainable Future Section. On June 18, the Vatican made public the “Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ of the Holy Father Francis on Care for Our Common Home.” The encyclical states clearly that climate change will affect everyone, while at the same time focusing on its particular impact on three populations: the poor, less-developed regions, and future generations. In his review of the encyclical, Max sees the Pope as placing great importance on the law and lawyers in the battle against climate change. Beyond their regulatory role, lawyers also have the opportunity to play a moral leadership role – to work to be better environmental stewards of the Earth. Max is a member of the OSB Sustainable Future Section’s Executive Committee.
