Trial lawyers looking to hone their skills will learn from seasoned litigator William (Rick) Martson, Jr. about the do’s and don’ts of opening statements, at an upcoming continuing legal education program.
Martson is one of the speakers at the Defense Practice Academy sponsored by the Oregon Association of Defense Counsel. The day-long event, scheduled for November 29 at the Tonkon Torp offices, will feature judges and trial lawyers who will share the nuts and bolts and the basic skills needed for trial.
Martson, a founding member of Tonkon Torp, practices in the firm’s Litigation Department, where he specializes in civil cases before state and federal courts. He has tried over 200 cases involving securities and shareholder rights as well as natural resource and environmental based litigation.
A past president of the International Society of Barristers, Martson has been recognized as a leader in commercial litigation law by the nationally trusted directories, Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers and Chambers USA – America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. He and three other Tonkon Torp litigators have been honored by their peers in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 editions of Benchmark Litigation, the Guide to America’s Leading Litigation Firms and Attorneys. Martson is a Visiting Professor at Willamette University College of Law, where he teaches trial practice and related courses.
