George represents individuals and businesses on a wide range of issues in their personal, commercial, and corporate activities. George’s practice background involves manufacturing, forest products, private investment, corporate governance, automobile dealerships, wealth planning, and nonprofits.
Known for combining his business knowledge, negotiating skills, and effective personal counseling approach, George advises clients in such areas as finance, family business planning and wealth management, mergers and acquisitions, commercial contracts, and corporate governance, both for profit and nonprofit entities.
He represents businesses through all development stages, from startup and early stage to maturity and sale. Clients involved in family businesses and wealth management particularly appreciate George's personal counseling approach.
George began his legal career in 1966 at Portland's Black & Apicella law firm, where his work included family business planning and, in corporate law, hostile takeovers, mergers and acquisitions, and securities financings. George moved to Tonkon Torp in 1989.

When the President of Lewis & Clark College made an unauthorized $10.5 million loan to an oil company that eventually defaulted on the loan, Tonkon Torp was asked to investigate.

Stimson Lumber Company shifted its strategic focus to the inland Northwest with its initial expansion into Montana in 1993, drawing on longtime counsel Tonkon Torp's expertise to handle the deal. Since then, Stimson has been adding to its inland operations in Eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana.
Stimson's Strategic Forestry: Redwood Conservation
Through much of family-owned Stimson Lumber's 150-year history, it actively expanded its holdings throughout the Northwest, acquiring prime forestlands in Washington, Oregon and California. When Stimson's strategic focus shifted to Oregon and inland states, it decided to sell its 25,000 acres in the Smith River watershed in Northern California.
