New Form I-9 Mandatory After May 7, 2013

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has released a new version of Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification). Employers should begin using the newly revised Form I-9 for all new hires and re-verifications, but may continue to use previous versions of Form I-9 (dated February 2, 2009 and August 8, 2009) until May 7, 2013. After May 7, 2013, employers are required to use the newly revised Form I-9 (dated March 8, 2013). The revision date is printed on the lower left corner of the form.

The Form I-9 is now two pages and provides more detailed instructions for completion. Key changes include that foreign national employees must provide foreign passport details and an I-94 card number in Section 1, Employee Information and Attestation. The new Form I-9 can be accessed at the following USCIS website: http://www.uscis.gov/i-9.
