Best Lawyers in America 2013®
has named five attorneys from Tonkon Torp LLP as Portland Lawyer of the Year for their particular specialties. Only a single lawyer in each specialty in each community is honored as the Lawyer of the Year by the peer review survey.
Named Portland Lawyer of the Year for their practice areas are: Sherrill A. Corbett, Corporate Compliance Law; Mark F. LeRoux, Tax Law; Janet Neuman, Water Law; Thomas P. Palmer, Securities Regulation; and Kenneth D. Stephens, Banking and Finance Law.
"Portland is a town with many fine lawyers, so it is particularly gratifying to me that five partners in our mid-size firm have been named by their professional peers as Lawyer of the Year," said Michael M. Morgan, managing partner. "The practice areas for which they were named also reflect Tonkon Torp's broad experience in corporate and business law."
Corbett chairs the firm's Mergers & Acquisitions Practice Group and is a member of the Corporate Finance Practice Group. She counsels clients on buying and selling businesses and structuring complex joint ventures. Corbett has represented, among others, The Greenbrier Companies as Oregon counsel on numerous corporate finance and acquisition matters.
Tax attorney LeRoux, a member of Tonkon Torp's Taxation Practice Group, focuses his practice on federal, state and local tax matters, including taxation of corporations, partnerships and LLCs as well as personal investments. He is a frequent speaker on tax matters before business organizations as well as continuing legal education seminars.
Neuman is considered one of the foremost water policy experts in the Pacific Northwest. She works with attorneys in Tonkon Torp's Water Law Practice Group who handle water rights transactions, water project development, permitting and litigation of water rights disputes for both government entities and private sector clients. A former professor and Associate Dean of Faculty at Lewis & Clark Law School, Neuman also co-directed the Natural Resources Law Institute.
Corporate attorney Palmer chairs the firm's Corporate Finance Practice Group. He specializes in securities and corporate transactions including mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings, other equity and debt offerings, and private placements. An important part of his practice is representation of special committees of directors, corporate governance issues, and SEC reporting and disclosure matters.
Stephens, one of Tonkon Torp's founding partners, is a member of the firm's Corporate Finance and Financial Services Practice Groups. With a practice focused on corporate and securities matters, he has extensive experience in various forms of debt and equity financings. Last year, he and colleague Albert Kennedy were honored by the Turnaround Management Association for their work on the turnaround of Sunwest Management Inc, the Salem, Oregon-based company that was at one time the fourth largest senior housing operator in the United States. Last year, Stephens was named Portland Lawyer of the Year for Corporate Law.
