Robyn
Robyn is a partner in our litigation group. Her practice focuses on appellate litigation and strategic motions practice.

Robyn regularly briefs and argues appeals in the Oregon Court of Appeals, Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals, and Oregon Supreme Court, as well as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She clerked for the Honorable John M. Steadman of the Washington, D.C. Court of Appeals in 1999-2000. In her appellate practice at Tonkon Torp, Robyn:

  • Represents clients in civil, criminal, administrative, bankruptcy, and land use appeals, in diverse subject matters.
  • Has done appellate work for both large and small companies—including Asante, Cambia, Costco, Gunderson, Sea River Properties, and Stimson, to name a few—as well as individuals.
  • Files amicus curiae briefs in the Oregon Supreme Court to advance clients' interests.

In addition to direct appellate work, Robyn frequently serves as motions counsel in trial court litigation. As motions counsel, Robyn strategizes with trial counsel and clients regarding how to use motions practice to minimize overall litigation costs and advance the client's ultimate objective, and then implements that strategy. Robyn has briefed and argued significant procedural and substantive motions in state and federal court in Oregon, Washington, and California. Examples of recent successes include obtaining:

  • Total summary judgment in a lease dispute within a few months of filing the complaint, clearing the way for sale of the property.
  • Dismissal of a 3,000+ employee wage and hour class action in California.
  • Release of a $5 million bond under complicated procedural circumstances.

Whether crafting an appellate brief or drafting a key motion, Robyn draws on her significant experience in complex commercial litigation. Robyn has worked on numerous complex cases, including the firm's representation of a former officer and director of Enron in numerous actions, the firm's representation of the former CEO of FLIR Systems, Inc. in various actions, and the firm's representation of Pepsi in a $100 million contract dispute.

Robyn is actively engaged in Bar service. She is currently Chair of the OSB Appellate Practice Section Executive Committee, on which she has served since 2011. Robyn also is a Region 5 delegate to the OSB House of Delegates (elected 2010 and 2013). At the national level, Robyn is an elected member of the Executive Board of the ABA's Council of Appellate Lawyers (CAL), as well as co-leading a CAL project to develop national model rules for e-briefing.

Robyn participates in several professional legal organizations, including Oregon Women Lawyers. Her charitable and community interests include the arts, the environment, and early childhood education. She is currently a Board member of Portland Story Theater.

Robyn and her husband David have two young children who have proven themselves native Oregonians by splashing in every puddle they have ever seen and complaining when the sun comes out that it is blinding them.

Robyn enjoys hiking, tennis, horseback riding, and kayaking. She is a long-time supporter of local theater, including currently serving on the board of Portland Story Theater.
